| Art Scanning FAQs:
Q1 : What are the different methods for scanning an artwork?
There are many different methods of scanning. The appropriate scanning solution will be chosen based on the original artwork's size, shape and color, and the desired resolution. Different types of scanners available include:
Small Flatbed scanners:
Scans original artworks or photographs. Some models come with a transparency adapter to scan slides or negatives up to 5" x 4".
Professional Large Format Flatbed scanners:
Same as a small flatbed scanner, but can scan larger sizes and are capable of much higher scanning resolutions.
For scanning film or transparencies only.
Capable of extremely high quality results. Highly skilled operation. Not suitable for original artwork, only film.
The image is captured into a digital file with no intermediate processing stage in-between. The image can be downloaded straight into the computer.
Digital Camera Backs:
Same as digital cameras, but produces a professional quality digital capture. A digital back that fits onto large format cameras, scanning directly into a computer interface.
Q2 : What type of artwork scanners do you use?
We use the Cruse family of scanners for large artworks, capable of scanning originals up to 48" x 72" with a depth of up to 4", at 600 DPI. For Scanning negatives, slides or small prints at up to 6400 dpi resolution we use Epson Perfection V750 Pro scanner.
Q3 : Does the Cruse scanner color calibrate automatically, or does calibration cost extra?
No, there is a need for color match after scan. Based on final print media, we need to compare the original and the printed material. If you would like to see a test strip of your scanned work, there is an additional charge depending on the number of test strips required.
Q4 : Can a painting be scanned with the frame on as long as it's not more than four inches deep?
Yes, our Cruse scanners are flat bed scanners and in some cases we can scan the artwork under the glass inside the frame without taking out the artwork.
Q5 : What is Scanography?
Scanography, also spelled scannography, is more commonly referred to as scanner photography. It is the process of capturing digitized images of objects for the purpose of creating printable art using a flatbed "photo" scanner with a CCD (charge-coupled device) array capturing device.
Q6 : Do you offer photography of original art?
No, we offer only flatbed scanning services.
Q7 : Do you offer 3D Scanning of Artworks?
No, our Cruse scanner can scan originals up to 4" depth, but the final is a bitmap image, not a 3D file.
