| ART IN QUEBEC CITY
|
 |
| Capital of the province of Quebec, Quebec City (also just called Quebec) is located approximately 2.5 hours northeast of Montreal. It is one of the oldest cities in North America, founded in 1608, and actually existed before the province itself. The city's name comes from its location close to the narrowing of the St. Lawrence River; in Algonquin, Kébec means "where the river narrows." It's surrounding ramparts are some of only a few remaining on the continent.
Many distinctive historical and cultural landmarks are located in Quebec City, many of which are located in the Old Quebec neighbourhood, which encompasses surviving structures from the original city. The Citadel, the Parliament building, and the National Museum of Fine Arts are just a few of the architectural gems that make Quebec City a popular tourist destination. Located nearby beautiful attractions like the Ice Hotel, Montmorency Falls, and the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, the city also hosts the annual Winter Carnival.

ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS
- One of the best known art galleries in Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des beaux-arts de Montreal) occupies four pavilions with 140,000 square feet of exhibition space. The oldest library in the country dedicated to the study of art also makes its home on the grounds. The museum was established in 1860.
The permanent collection housed within the museum includes a number of Inuit artworks, as well as pieces by Tom Thompson, and James Wilson Morrice. Non-Canadian pieces are also in residence, such as Renaissance medallions, pieces inspired by Caravaggio, Dutch and Flemish Baroque paintings, works by Nicholas Poussin and Rembrandt, Courbet and Renoir.
The MMFA was the site of the largest and most infamous art theft in Canadian history. In 1972, a group of armed robbers made off with jewelry, sculptures, and eighteen paintings (including a Rembrandt), the total of which is estimated to be worth over $11 million today. The items have never been recovered.
- Galerie d'Art Royale, run by the Beauchamp family, features pieces from around the world: from Algeria, to Italy, to France. The pieces showcase a range of media, including acrylics, oils, pastels, sculpture, and more. The gallery has a comprehensive virtual gallery in addition to their Place Royale shop, which sells high-quality originals artwork. In total, the family owns seven galleries in the city which exhibit the work of more than 200 artists.
- Within the exclusive shopping complex of the Chateau Frontenac is the Kulik Gallery, which celebrates the work of Inuit artists. The stone and stencil carvings, prints, and statues were all created by the residents of Canada's great north. Brousseau et Brousseau is another Inuit art gallery which features artists who continue to work in traditional Inuit styles.
- The Outdoor Gallery is located, as the name suggests, in a small alleyway that runs between Rue Ste-Anne and Rue Buade. Mimicking the atmosphere of street markets from a century ago, the street is home to painters and craftspeople who showcase their wares during the warm months of the year.
