Today, despite these statistics, the population of Detroit continues to decline. Resurgence is hinted at in the arrival of many young professionals and artists in the central areas of the city, which has sparked the revitalization of Midtown and New Center. Live music is a popular draw, and a number of nationally lauded performance venues exist in the city, as well as the now-famous Motown Records. The city is also home to many contemporary art exhibit spaces.

ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS

• A contemporary art venue with an impressive permanent collection, the Cranbrook Art Museum located just outside the city has works by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Charles and Ray Eames, and others. Originally opened in 1942, the museum is housed in the same building as the Cranbrook Academy of Art. An expansion in 2011 added enough space for the facility's entire collection to be on display at all times.

  The Cranbrook Education Community itself is a national historic landmark, and home to the Cranbrook House and Gardens, Cranbrook Schools, and the Cranbrook Institute of Science, as well. The buildings were built in the Arts and Crafts style in the 1920s.

• At the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the most modern of contemporary art is showcased. The museum has no permanent collection; rather, it considers itself reactionary to art as it changes through time, and strives to encourage dialogue and public interaction.

  Within the purposely unfinished architecture of the building, a great number of travelling shows have be exhibited, in a range of genres from fashion to cartoons. The museum includes a shop that specializes in cultural magazines, books, journals, and collectables that are not available elsewhere in the city.

• Home to one of the largest and most significant collections in the country, the Detroit Institute of Arts was established in 1885 and is the nation's second largest city-owned museum. The Beaux-Arts building, built in 1927, houses more than 100 galleries. After the museum's first painting was donated in 1883, the collection continued to grow until it consisted of more than 65,000 pieces, in every genre from Egyptian to contemporary.

  In addition to playing host to major, international exhibitions, the museum also has a 1150-seat film theatre. Artworks by an exhaustive range of artists adorn every room, with some highlights including Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Revere, Jan van Eyck, Bellini, Peter Paul Rubens, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

• The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit plays host to community events including exhibitions, performances, discussions, and lectures in the field of contemporary art. Founded in 1978 by local artists, the institute had no permanent home until 2004, when it moved into the former home of the Detroit Contemporary, which was remodelled to provide gallery, performance and administrative spaces.

  The organization partners with a variety of local businesses, including Whitdel Arts, Ladybug Studios clay studio and gallery, and the Detroit Broadcasting Company.

ARTISTIC INSTITUTIONS

• Established in 1906, the College for Creative Studies grants graduate degrees with concentrations in color and materials design, interaction design, interdiscplinary design, and transportation design. The school, which enrols nearly 1500 students, also offers Bachelor degrees in a wide range of subjects, including photography, interior design, advertising, product design, and entertainment arts.

  In addition to its post-secondary offerings, the college also provides educational programs for more than 4000 local children each year, free of charge. The college also mans the Henry Ford Academy, a public middle and high school which enrolls 800 students in a curriculum heavily focussed on art and design.

• Students enrolled at Marygrove College have the opportunity to study art, art therapy, theatre, and music. Established in 1905, the college offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees to nearly 2000 students annually in more than 60 areas of study. Those who undertake art at Marygrove delve into graphic design, consider and write about art history, and are expected to absorb and spend time around art as much as possible. The result is an immersive program designed to create a well-rounded art professional.

• At Wayne State University, artistically inclined students can receive their undergraduate degree in art, art history, film, media arts, theatre, or music. Graduate programs are also available in all these areas except film and media arts. The university was established in 1868, and enrolls nearly 30,000 students. Thirteen separate departments offer more than 350 different programs.

  Numerous libraries and student housing facilities exist on campus, while six satellite campuses serve students in other areas of the Detroit metro area. The main campus is ideally located near the Detroit Institute of Arts, and various film and music venues.

• A center for graduate study in a variety of artistic concentrations, Cranbook Academy of Art began offering art instruction in the 1920s and became an official institution in 1932. Located on the 319-acre property of the Cranbrook Educational Community, the academy has ten departments comprised of 2D design, 3D design, architecture, ceramics, fibers, metalsmithing, painting, photography, print media, and sculpture.

  The learning structure is built around a mentorship program, with one artist- or designer-in-residence serving as the instructor and faculty leader for each department. Approximately 15 students are selected by that instructor for each program.

• Earn a certificate in Graphic Design or Digital Media Production at Wayne County Community College.

• The Art Institute of Michigan offers degree programs in culinary arts, fashion design, interior design, and more.

• Expand your creative horizons by taking a pottery class at Pewabic.

• Grosse Pointe Art Center offers oil and watercolor painting classes, as well as Japanese woodblock printing.

• Take a twelve week class on ceramics and create something beautiful and practical at the Michigan Art Center.

• Paint Creek Center for the Arts offers adult and kids classes in drawing and painting, as well as summer camps and scholarships.

NATIVE ARTISTS

There are plenty of artistic people originally from, or currently living in Detroit, Michigan!

• Painter and sculptor Charles McGee moved to the city as a child, and many of his works are prominently featured around town.

• Carol Wald (1935-2000) is best known as an illustrator, and studied and taught at various institutes in the city. She was awarded a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators in 1976.

• Known for designs that "transcend eras", fashion designer Anna Sui recently received a lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

• Bill Schwab is a photographer who is recognized for his urban landscape images. His work is in numerous galleries and private collections around the world.

• Beginning his professional career as a War Artist, Carl Owens went on to teach art in the city, and work as a self-employed artist for nearly 40 years. His work is shown in the Whitney Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago, among other prominent locations.

• A number of celebrities were born in Detroit, including Tom Sellack, Della Reese, Kristen Bell, Selma Blair, and Lily Tomlin.

ART AND CULTURAL EVENTS

Annual Events

• First held in 1977, Dally in the Alley is a one-day street festival held the Saturday following Labor Day. The event brings thousands of visitors to the streets of Cass Corner, to check out homemade arts and crafts sold by vendors lining the roads, watch performance artists on the live stages, and enjoy local food and drink. The festival is delivered in its entirety by a group of dedicated volunteers, and proceeds from the event go back into the community to help support those who live and work there.

• Sidewalk began August, 2013, and offers visitors a unique blend of performance art, dance, music, sculpture, and theatre, displayed throughout the streets of the Old Redford and Brightmoor areas of the city. Past shows have included hip hop performances, belly dancing, Shakespeare, experimental dance, traditional drummers, and interactive art. The event is created and put on completely by members of the community and artists, and donations go toward the event itself. The inaugural festival drew 1,000 visitors, and the event has since drawn praise, recognition, and grants.

• The Funky Ferndale Art Fair is located just outside Detroit proper, and offers a unique art festival with a focus on art you might not readily find at other venues. A berth of artists apply each year to fill the 120 open spots, and local restaurants present their wares as well. The event offers visitors a view of both two- and three-dimensional art, as well as unique fashion design - any piece of creativity that makes a statement.
