Guide to Artificial Intelligence Image Generators

Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is machine generated intelligence. It is a simulation of natural human intelligence but through the process of machines such as computers. It is a computer software that mimics human intelligence, and thinks for itself even though it is not a living organism. There are currently four primary classifications of AI; reactive, limited memory, theory of mind, and self-awareness. Reactive AI simply reacts to the current scenario it receives without being able to look at any previous data to rely upon for decision making. Limited Memory AI refers to the data and previous knowledge AI is able to store. Theory of Mind refers to human thoughts, feelings, and emotions that affect our behaviour therefore future AI will have to be able to understand these human tendencies. AI is not yet self aware unlike how humans are. In today's day and age, there is so much knowledge available in the world that it makes it impossible for a human to absorb and interpret all of this information. This is where AI comes in as it is able to review all the available knowledge and make complex decisions. AI was invented by computer scientist John McCarthy. AI is largely used to make personalized recommendations to people based on their previous online history such as purchases or searches. AI generated art is when artificial intelligence uses algorithms to create images. It does so by scanning all the available information on visual structure, style, and text labels for images. Then when given a prompt, it can create a new image based on all the information it knows on the subject matter. It analyzes thousands of images in a certain aesthetic and will usually create lifelike or surrealist artworks.

DALL-E 2

DALL-E 2 was developed by OpenAI and it is a machine learning module that generates digital images through the use of natural language descriptions. OpenAI is an AI research company that works with artificial general intelligence. DALL-E 2 became available as of 2022. This generator creates realistic images and artworks by combining styles, concepts, and attributes. DALL-E 2 can be inspired by already existing images and create different variations of it. As well, it can add and remove elements while taking shadows, reflections, and textures into account. Overall, DALL-E 2 produces the best images based on text compared to other AI image generating sites however it is not free.

Midjourney

Midjourney is a small, self funded, independent research lab that's main focuses are AI, human infrastructure, and design. Midjourney is best known for its artistic style. In order to access this site for free you are required to have a discord which is a social platform.

Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion research has created AI models for language, audio, video, imaging, 3D, and biology. Although it is up for the public to use, it is important to the company that participants use their models in an ethical, moral, and legal manner. This is a free software on an open source however Stable Diffusion is not the best AI image generating software in comparison to the previously mentioned.

Nightcafe

Nightcafe is a text to image art generator that was founded in 2019. It requires no artistic skill whatsoever, only your imagination! Nightcafe was created for anyone in need of personalized artworks. Its simple layout makes it easy to use, all you have to do is describe what you want to see and then click create. It will automatically generate an image based on your description. We tried creating our own AI generated artworks and here are some of our creations on the right! We used the keywords 'a forest of furniture' and 'coffee mug in flowers' and these are the results we got.

Overall, there aren't many AI art generating softwares available to the public but DALL-E 2, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and Nightcafe are some of the better ones available! Although DALL-E 2 isn't free, it does produce the highest quality generated images as it interprets the prompt most clearly. Whereas Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are free, Midjourney requires a discord and Stable Diffusion struggles to interpret its prompts. Lastly Nightcafe is simple and easy to use but isn't the best text to image generator, it is also a platform that sources from other AI sites.
